Field Trip

The sky took a break from pelting us today, so I thought I’d treat everyone to a little outdoor excitement.

Although I’ve been keeping both rounds of seed sets indoors since last Wednesday, the damage had already been done from the cooler temperatures they’d been experiencing earlier, and I think only half of both cucumber varieties are going to hang on much longer. The four roselle that showed themselves have succumbed, as have the two emergent Sagwa Chamoe. Lady Choi posse still looks okay, although three of the seedlings that popped up have been unable to shake their seed coat, which seems like a problem. The beans have unexpectedly continued to flourish, and so I went ahead and potted up three of the black chestnut.

Only black chestnut and Manoa lettuce (plus one Suyo Long cucumber) have germinated from round 2, despite enjoying indoor warmth at all times up until today. The lettuce appears to require very direct sunlight, as they immediately got leggy and are certainly not going to make it.

I took a handful of those saved seeds and tossed them directly into the largest raised bed outside, to see how they do there. Meanwhile, two Korean cosmos have germinated, one of each type in that comparative trial.
